Why choose the sonnet? Are there some tones or topics that work better than others in this compressed form? How much can you stretch the form and still call it a sonnet? In this online class we’ll look at several distinct uses of the sonnet, as well as what makes some sonnets especially expressive. You’ll read a variety of classic, contemporary, and experimental sonnets, and get ample opportunity to practice writing your own. If you’re new to the sonnet, you’re guaranteed to learn how they work and to meet at least one that you like. If you’re already in love (or hate!) with sonnets, you’ll get a chance to try new approaches and refine your craft.
Please note that this class is not structured as a workshop. Though there will be opportunities to share what you write, we will spend the majority of class time reading, analyzing, discussing, listening, and generating new work. Expect to devote some time between classes to reading sonnets (texts and detailed study guides provided) and completing new poems. |
